Snow Angels Set: Avoiding Lily

Actress Kate Beckinsale avoided her own daughter on the set of her latest film Snow Angels - because the traumatic storyline made her so upset.

The British beauty plays a single mother who has an affair with a married man in the upcoming film, leading to the mysterious disapperance of her daughter.
But the Underworld star became so wrapped up in the role, she had to hide from her own daughter Lily - so the nine-year-old wouldn't catch her in a distressed state.

She tells U.K. magazine Closer, "It was too intense. I didn't want Lily to see me in that state - it exhausted me on a psychological level."

Snow Angels = Amazing

Ahh! I saw Snow Angelsyesterday afternoon! Rather than spoiling the entire film (as I typically do with my reviews), I leave with you the suspense of simply tell you that it's amazing. Absolutely epic. Gut wrenching. Wonderful.

Beautifully assembled story with some of the best cinemaphotography I've ever seen. The acting, especially by that of Sam Rockwell, was cliff hanging. But of course, Kate was fantastic too. I reckon that it's easily the best movie she's ever starred in.

A definite favourite: 10/10

Kate Talks 'Snow Angels' & 'Underworld'

Kate recently did an interview with one Rebecca Murray this past week in promotion of Snow Angels. Excerpts of the online article can be found below:

“She's got a job that's not fulfilling. She's solely responsible physically, financially for a child. She has a husband who she's separated from who is kind of like another child almost and not responsible,” explained Beckinsale. “She's kind of responsible for her mother. I think she's very oppressed by her life and feels like she was going to get more out of it than she did and disappointed and struggling. Because she's busy and overwhelmed, her life's kind of like a treadmill that she can't get off. She makes certain choices because she's so consumed in the just next thing all the time.”

- “Then [she] finds herself on a really tough journey, things that are happening to her that are going to spoil everything. I think she's a single mother and I've been a single mother and been under the same pressures that she's been under. It's a very common feeling of loneliness and pressure and responsibility that a lot of people I think feel. It's just that Annie's circumstances ramp up.”

- Thankfully, getting into and then stepping back from this character was something Beckinsale was able to do as needed. “It depends on the scene,” offered Beckinsale. “I think some of the scenes towards the end of the movie, it became like Sam [Rockwell] and I going into our corners like a big boxing match. We'd get our little mouth guards out and take a breather and come back. There's not a lot of joking in that because you really want to keep - when there's a great energy that you have and it's working, you don't want to distract from it. It's very easy to be distracted on a film set. There's so much going on and people running around.”

- Despite the film’s dark qualities, Beckinsale says the set was a happy one - thanks to how writer/director David Gordon Green ran it. “…We had loads of fun. He picked a lot of people who were capable of having a good laugh. That really helped…”

- Also fun for the British actress was the opportunity to not have to look like a movie star. Beckinsale says it was refreshing to take part in a movie that wasn’t all about looking glamorous. “I feel less insecure about looking like sh*t seeing as I can do that just waking up easier than the other thing. I don't know. The whole glamorous thing is puzzling to me. I was monumentally ugly until I was about 15 so I still have that mindset.”

- After completing Snow Angels, Beckinsale stayed busy with a batch of other film projects including Winged Creatures with Dakota Fanning and Forest Whitaker and Nothing But the Truth with David Schwimmer. “In Winged Creatures I play a single mother who's a waitress in a diner who witnesses a random shooting murder and becomes affected with post traumatic stress and starts harming her baby. Another light comedy. Then Nothing But the Truth, I play a journalist who exposes somebody she knows as a covert CIA operative and is taken to the grand jury to reveal the source and won't, [and she] goes to jail. It's not Judith Miller. It sounds like Judith Miller, but it's not actually Judith Miller. Kind of a little bit like that.”

On Underworld:

- And what of those rumors of a cameo in the prequel? “They're shooting it right now. It's in New Zealand so probably not. But it's a family movie,” said Beckinsale. “My daughter's dad is the lead and my husband's producing it so I feel like we've got the family franchise going.”

- It’s definitely unusual that everyone gets along so well, and Beckinsale knows she’s lucky. As for how she did it, Beckinsale said, “I think because I pick great guys. I love Michael. Michael's fantastic. It shouldn't necessarily have gone on and on forever with us, but he is one of my absolutely favorite people ever. I think we both felt that it was really important for Lily, our daughter, to have everybody coming from the same place. He loves her and I love her and Len loves her. Everyone's nice. The guys both get along. I do feel like that's my major achievement of the last decade that my daughter is totally unscathed and great. I am proud of that.”

"If Terrence Malick was 20 years younger and half as talented he might have presented us with this dreary ensemble pastiche. The bleak, frigid Midwest (ever typified as little more than a breeding ground for freaks and misfits) is Green's stage of the absurd. Stuttering loser Glenn (Rockwell, in a skin than he seems to be most at home in) feebly attempts to hold down his entry-level job and keep his thoughts on the lord instead of his ex-wife, who just makes him want to die. His far-too-pretty-to-be-believable, inexplicably pathetic ex-wife Annie’s shoes are filled by a passable but decidedly miscast Beckinsale. The emotional tragedy of Glenn, Annie, and the awful disappearance of their four year old daughter is clearly the film's central story, yet for whatever reason we spend a great deal of time following Arthur, an ineffectual teenager than Annie used to babysit, Arthur’s cute Anne-Hathaway-lookalike girlfriend who adores him for no fucking perceptible reason, and his divorcing parents, whose aimless storyline wouldn’t even constitute a short film in itself. Glenn, never passing an opportunity to be pitiable, simpers and stalks his way back into Annie’s simple life (which is somehow too complicated for her to handle) just as their daughter disappears – if Glenn’s lord has a sense of humor, the joke’s on Glenn.

Angels is a half-hearted effort in which Green should've demanded much stronger performances. It's pretty clear that mumbly improvisation only works when it's coming from a highly talented actor (and almost exclusively in a comedy setting), and for such an understated product like this, it simply doesn’t cut it. There is an awkward imbalance of comedy and drama - Green seems to have chosen drama over comedy as the dominant mood, but can't reconcile the decision, continually working tiny half-jokes into virtually every single scene, injecting the world he creates with a grim absurdity. The film ends leaving us with the feeling that our random, irreverent lives will spiral into oblivion and that the incomprehensible boulder of the world will roll on with no imprint of our struggles and confusion – darned pessimistic. Angels is too stylish and off-puttingly lighthearted to function as seriously as it attempts and at best will resonate numbly, and only with those who ‘really appreciate what Green was going for.’ The problem is that the film is really only at all useful to those who are currently caught up in the same bullshit as Green... although... given his obsession with ignorant hicks with poor senses of humor and virtually no control over their own lives, that may be more people than I'd care to admit."

Most Influential Women in Horror (#8)

The lovely and talented Heidi Martinuzzi over at Pretty-Scary.net, a website devoted to women in horror, by women in horror, has just listed her top 20 Most Influential Women in Horror. I’m proud to be part of the list. Thanks Heidi! Here’s a copy of the article:

8. Kate Beckinsale

If you can forgive her for Van Helsing, then you can forgive anyone for anything. Which is why you probably are enjoying Kate Beckinsale on the DVD release of Vacancy, the extremely successful slasher/thriller film set in a motel that co-starred Luke Wilson. I have nothing else to say about Ms. Beckinsale.

You need to see this trailer! Snow Angels is a phenomenal movie from Sundance last year with an incredible ensemble cast made up of Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell in his greatest performance ever, the charming and gorgeous Olivia Thirlby, and up-and-comer Michael Angarano. It's a drama that brings out an emotional response like no other and I won't even dare spoil it. It's not set to arrive until March of next year, but this is one to keep eye on and not miss, as it's such an incredible movie.

You can read my review from Sundance as well - I gave it a strong 8 out of 10. Snow Angels is directed by indie filmmaker David Gordon Green who is actually currently working on Pineapple Express, the Judd Apatow stoner comedy with Seth Rogen and James Franco. If you can believe it, he went from what you see below in the trailer to this "reefer madness".

The story of Snow Angels is fairly simply, and perhaps even familiar in the independent arena. A couple that have separated (Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale) are each attempting to pick up the threads of a future when they are dealt a further blow that leads to a dark conclusion. And a somewhat-nerdy young man in the throes of discovering a first romance must also deal with the separation and consequent strife of his parents’ failed relationship.

Snow Angels was both written and directed by David Gordon Green, of Undertow, All the Real Girls, Pleasant Grove, and George Washington. The film is an adaptation of the novel by Stewart O'Nan of the same name. Snow Angels arrives in limited theaters starting on March 7th, 2008.

Columbus Short Interview

You might recall, Kate went to Columbus' Birthday just a few months ago (September 18th).

His debut film opened at number one, and Columbus Short’s follow-up flick is looking at a high-profile opening later this month. So, what project does the fast-rising actor want to use his newfound clout to help bring to the screen?

Excerpt:

“I’m in a movie with kitty-cat-Kate,” he joked, revealing a playful nickname for his “Whiteout” co-star Ms. Beckinsale. “That one drops next October and it’s me, Kate, and Gabriel Macht. It’s a suspense/thriller that takes place in Antarctica. I’m a U.S. Coast Guard pilot, she’s a U.S. Marshall, and we’re on this track to figure out the first murder in Antarctica; it’s going to be an interesting tale.”

Memphis Production for "Nothing but the Truth"

"Nothing But The Truth," an upcoming movie set in Washington, will be filmed in Memphis.

The movie, starring Matt Dillon, Alan Alda, and Kate Beckinsdale, comes to town as the result of a major campaign by the Memphis and Shelby County Film and Television Commission.

Much of the shooting for the film will take place in Judge Bernice Donald's courtroom at the federal building downtown.

Speaking by phone from a convention in New Mexico, Memphis and Shelby County Film and Television Commission Chairman Linn Sitler said "Nothing But the Truth" director Rod Lurie was attracted to Memphis by new incentives Tennessee enacted to lure film makers.

"Where if you leave a million dollars in the state, you receive a 15% refund on certain aspects of your expenses," she said.

As part of the incentive deal, movie makers agree to hire local people and feature music in the film by Tennessee musicians.

"These people will leave two or three times what the state will give them, and the city and county gives them, in terms of job training, and we will end up with yet one more great film on our resume and more trained crew people," Sitler said.

Another incentive was free office space movie makers will be given on Beale Street. More incentives are expected to follow.

Sitler said it is all the result of teamwork involving state, city and county officials, as well as some federal help from Senator Steve Cohen's office.
